Deborah Babin
I cannot recall a time in my childhood when I wasn’t creating even if I was simply playing and filling a coloring book. I am a highly visual person which fuels my love for art, I see my world through my artists lenses.
My official art journey began in the mid 80’s when I decided to attend college majoring in Fine Arts.   That time was extremely valuable and memorable and provided the foundation I rely on to this day. This education supported me throughout my life and art career and continues in my retirement years. Â
In the 90’s I discovered textile/fiber art. This art is made with fabric and stitched into a composition. I was intrigued and eventually compelled to embrace this medium as I loved to sew and work with my hands. The reality is this medium requires patience and persistence, as the construction process may extend months to complete one piece. I enjoyed the challenges and met many accomplished and interesting artists. I participated in multiple national and international juried exhibitions. Â
My focus was radically redirected in 2015. I had a fabulous opportunity to visit Amsterdam which included a tour of the VanGogh Museum. This tour had a profound effect! Seeing this art in person left me awestruck! This was so compelling that I decided then and there to make a complete change of focus. I retired from the textile art world and began to paint, seriously.
I prefer acrylic and watercolor paint and combine mixed media. My favorite genre is Still Life/TableScapes which include favorite subjects like vessels, fruits and flowers. I also like drawing and painting faces and landscapes. Occasionally I include a landscape with a still life. My painting style has evolved but I would describe it as casual and fun.
This phase has been the most fulfilling and productive. I now have an extensive collection of original paintings on canvas and paper. Â
Making art is super joyful! It is an adventure, which keeps me active, connected and positive; which spurs my enthusiasm and curiosity. The challenges keep me sharp and determined.
Sketchbooks are actively utilized in my art practice, as a playground for experimentation. The books accompany me on travel. A fresh quick drawing or painting captures the memories much better than a photograph. Occasionally, I make a small art piece to leave behind or gift to a special person I meet. I have left art in many countries. This warms my heart.
